From 23-26 June 2026, OVAM colleagues participated in the 15th meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention. This convention governs transboundary movements of hazardous and other wastes and is implemented in the European Union through the Waste Shipment Regulation.

A wide range of important topics were discussed during the meeting, including:

  • strengthening the notification procedure for transboundary movements of (hazardous) wastes;
  • exploring possible additional measures for used textiles and textile waste;
  • evaluating the recent amendments on plastic waste and considering potential follow-up actions;
  • reviewing Annexes I and III, which determine when waste is classified as hazardous; and
  • developing guidance for the appropriate classification of electronic waste.

Work on these topics will continue in the coming months in preparation for the 18th Conference of the Parties, which is scheduled to take place in Panama City in April 2027.
