Orion Dashboard - Landfill Miner Guide

The landfill miner guide (LFMG) provides a deeper understanding of the landfill mining concept and challenges that come with such a project. All the tools to understand the main concepts behind “landfill mining”, the current challenges, and how to overcome them are given. Furthermore, the technical aspects of a landfill mining project are covered, including landfill content characterization up to the site restoration after mining. The LFMG is written by the RAWFILL project partners, based on scientific literature as well as on the experiences acquired during the project and exchanged knowledge during RAWFILL events. The LFMG is designed for all types of stakeholders e.g. landfill owners, project managers, regional authorities.

The guide summarizes all aspects of a landfill mining project. First, the concept of landfill mining is explained and the need to consider Dynamic Landfill Management is demonstrated based on the landfill features that can change over time. Also subjects like dynamic waste management and legislation (with focus on the EU) are covered. An important aspect of the LFMG is the landfill characterization. For this purpose, the technology of geophysical imaging, the principles on how to use it and how to perform a geophysical survey on site are explained. With this information, the reader will learn how to select the most suitable geophysical methods depending on the landfill geometry and the type of landfilled waste. The innovative RAWFILL landfill characterization methodology, coupling multi approach geophysics and targeted waste sampling, is presented. Furthermore, the RAWFILL flow is described in detail from the ELIF (Enhanced Landfill Inventory Framework) to the two-steps Decision Support Tool - Cedalion and Orion, which you are using right now.

The LFMG also includes some recommendations for landfill mining works on site. For example, the excavation of landfilled waste materials can help to recover land (Waste-to-Land) and the excavated waste materials can be revalorized either into Materials (Waste-to-Materials) or Energy (Waste-to-Energy). The potential valorisation for each main type of waste is presented as well. Guidelines for the choice of site rehabilitation are provided together with an overview of the different possibilities for rehabilitation. These guidelines were drafted in function of the necessary balance between the project’s profitability, environmental and social constraints. Another important aspect that should be taken into account when starting your landfill mining project, is how to deal with stakeholders and local communities. In this context, the LFMG gives some information on how to involve local communities and stakeholders in a landfill mining project. Lastly, several examples and case studies of landfill mining projects that are already implemented in Europe are presented. These will give you some valuable information on the experiences of others and practicalities and benefits of conducting a landfill mining project.
