Landfills and transport systems

When a landfill mining project is conducted, there will be a large amount of waste that should be transported to treatment facilities. Preferably, this transport should be organised in a sustainable way, using intermodal transport instead of CO2 intensive road transport by means of trucks. In this way, CO2 emissions can be minimised and the pressure on the road networks, highways and traffic can be limited, lowering the possibilities for traffic congestions as well.

The RAWFILL project partners, in collaboration with Logistics in Wallonia, developed a cost simulator for transportation. This calculation module compares the cost for transportation by using either truck, train or by using a multimodal transportation approach (combining truck and train). In the future, a barge option will be included. The cost simulator can be downloaded here.

Regional tools

Belgium

In Belgium, there is LAMBIT: a model for the development of sustainable intermodal transport in Belgium, developed by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). It is a decision support tool for stakeholders within the transport sector including both public and private actors that are searching for optimal locations for intermodal transport terminals. LAMBIT also demonstrates the competitiveness of intermodal transport compared to unimodal transport.

Wallonia

All the loading platforms located in Wallonia for train and barge are mapped in an application developed by the RAWFILL project partners and Logistics in Wallonia. Information regarding the platform characteristics, availabilities and operator contact are provided.
