KARMA
Circular Economy in the Construction Sector - Acting Today for a Better Future
Flanders Circular / OVAM is partner in this Interreg Europe project KARMA that aims to gain insights and develop methodologies and policy instruments through exchanges with regional partners, specifically looking for synergies of the Local Energy and Climate Pact (as an elaboration of European commitments and the Flemish Energy and Climate Plan) on the one hand, and a growing potential of circular strategies in the field of building, producing and consuming on the other hand.
This European project also ties in with research, Work Agendas and policy areas at the Flemish level, and in particular with organizations such as VVSG, Agentschap Binnenlands Bestuur, VEKA, Department of Environment and VLAIO. In KARMA, Flanders Circular will explore adjustments to the (local) climate policy and to consider, together with relevant parties, the formulation of additional circular objectives and measures. The focus is on the potential of a circular and climate-robust built environment. Through several rounds of interregional learning moments, the implementation of a communication strategy, participation in living labs and cooperation in a European and Flemish context, the project aims at a clear view of how Flanders and local governments can work on the integration of local circular and climate policies.

80-90% of the discarded office furniture in the EU is incinerated or landfilled, leading to unnecessary CO2 emissions and material waste. A link needs to be established between sustainable furniture management and changing needs and demands in the work environment.
The CEO project aims to establish this link to accelerate the innovative, resource efficient and circular economy. By moving to scale, introducing modularity and adaptability in product design product life is extended and waste reduced. CEO encourages public and private stakeholders along the value chain to foster the circular economy mindset and build sustainable practices, products and solutions. 8 pilot actions will be jointly developed to move existing ideas to scale, test innovative approaches, facilitate sustainable transformation and uptake of the sector while ensuring flexibility, climate protection and establishing territorial connections.
